Help

Curtis Brown handles permission rights for many of the world's leading authors and estates, in all languages and territories. Sometimes rights are retained by the publisher, and in those cases we will be happy to suggest who best to contact.

Please note that we receive a high volume of requests so it is important to apply as far ahead of your deadline as possible. We will try to respond to your application within 4-6 weeks. We appreciate your patience.

Once your request has been reviewed, we will contact you to make sure that we have all the necessary information and/or to provide a quote for the fee. Our minimum fee for the use of an extract is £75.00 excluding VAT.

Our permissions website is designed to be as user friendly as possible, but if you do have a question that we haven’t answered below, please write to: info@curtisbrown.co.uk

Q: I think my use is Fair Usage – do I still need to seek permission?

You are advised to always get the permission of the owner prior to use.

Q: What do I do if the author I am looking for is not listed here?

If you cannot find the author on our website, then it is likely that we do not represent that person. You can write to info@curtisbrown.co.uk to enquire further. Please note that we are not affiliated with Curtis Brown New York.

Q: What do I do if the work I am looking for is not listed here?

You can free type into the relevant box on the request form, and we will be able to investigate who holds the rights, and if we can license them.

Q: I need this permission urgently – can I expedite the permission process?

If you need permission sooner than the 4-6 week window that we aim to respond within, please mention the urgency of your request and the date of your deadline in the ‘any other information’ section of your permission request form. We will do our best, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to expedite your request.

Q: What do I do if I want to cancel the permission request?

You can cancel your permission request by logging into the site and navigating to your list of requested Permissions. Click on a permission and then find the Cancel Permission button on the right hand side bar.

Q: Can I change or add details to my request after I have submitted it?

You can’t edit your request once you have submitted it. You’ll either need to cancel your request and submit a new one, or advise us of any small changes once we contact you regarding your request.

Q: Can I request the use of a photograph or illustration from a work?

Before contacting Curtis Brown about a photograph or illustration used in one of our author’s works we recommend that you look at the credit line of the image. If the credit mentions a Curtis Brown author, please fill out our permission request form. If it does not, please contact the copyright holder.

Q: The details of my request are not yet finalised. Can I still submit my permission request?

The more information you can provide at this stage, the better. We can look into your request in principle if the form is incomplete, but we will need the full details in order to generate a fee and licence.

Q: Do you accept credit card or PayPal payments?

No, payment may only be made by bank transfer or cheque.
